Night Vision Electronic Sensors & Directorate located at Fort Belvoir was interested in becoming more energy efficient, but wasn’t sure of the best approach. NVESD retained Energy Efficient Technologies to evaluate a variety of alternative energy technologies, identify the most sensible solutions, and make recommendations.
Several technologies were evaluated and one approach rose to the top—an on-site micro-grid utilizing tri-generation. Tri-generation takes advantage of waste heat from electricity generation to create steam and chilled water. Hence tri-generation gets its name from the simultaneous production of electricity, steam and chilled water.
Energy Efficient Technologies developed a cash-flow model based on the capture of waste heat from an on-site electricity generation plant. Based on capturing almost all the waste heat, our analysis indicates that NVESD could reduce its electricity costs by more than 60 percent and reduce its carbon footprint by approximately 45 percent.
Here’s what our client has to say:
“It is because of EET’s knowledge and ability to create a clear and understandable message for Army Leadership in the Pentagon that our 5 mW Energy Security Microgrid is being implemented beginning in 2012. When completed, we believe that this project will represent a transformational outcome for the future of Energy Security at many other DOD installations for years to come.” –
