Westfields Marriott

After 11 years of successful CryoGenX4 validations at numerous Marriott Corporate locations, Westfields Marriott was selected to perform a detailed, heavily documented validation pilot for Dominion Energy, aimed at securing CryoGenX4’s inclusion in the utility rebate program.

CryoGenX4 produced a 13.26% reduction of overall electric bills in the cooling months.

From 27 August 2023 to January 2025, Energy Efficient Technologies (EET), with oversight and logistical support from the Marriott Corporate Facilities team and TRC (representing the utility Dominion Energy), began an HVAC performance improvement demonstration at the Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles located in Chantilly, VA.

Detailed baseline and post measurements were taken of five (5) Roof Top Air Conditioning Units (RTUs) serving the hotel of various ages and sizes. One of two 190-ton air cooled chillers and a rack of small refrigeration equipment was also measured. The primary purpose of this exercise was to demonstrate the energy savings, increased efficiency, and carbon footprint reductions achieved by implementing the energy control measure (ECM) CRYOGENX4.

Two different testing methodologies were utilized during this pilot to illustrate the improvements brought on by CRYOGENX4. Each is described below and expanded upon in subsequent sections of this report.

1. IPMVP (international performance measurement and verification protocols) measurements of all 5 RTUs and the Chiller in the baseline and post periods.
2.  Continuous power meter monitoring of all 5 RTUs, Chiller, and refrigeration rack before and after the introduction of the ECM every one minute.

Performance Results from the Demo- Annual Electric Bill Review 2023 vs 2024

By evaluating energy usage at similar weather and occupancy days,
CryoGenX4 produced a 13.26% reduction of overall electric bills.

Performance Results from the Demo- At the Machines- Two Methods

The average key performance indicators (KPI’s) measured across all the equipment were tested using the International Performance & Measurement Verification Protocols (IPMVP). They are very consistent with our historical improvements for 15-year-old units, as well as the performance losses predicted by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Both methods of testing provided similar successful results:

  • Improvement in efficiency (kW/Ton) of 26.1%
  • Improvement of capacity (tons of cooling provided) of 28.7%
  • Improvement of EER of 36%
  • Improvement of Chilled water delta (colder water out) of 31%

Other improvement metrics are included in the chart below:
